The Roof was founded in Athens in 2004 and was built with the exclusive funding and supervision of the Onassis Foundation. The building was erected on a private plot of three acres on 107-109 Sygrou Avenue, surrounded by four streets covering an entire building block and has an interior space of total area 18.000 sq.m.
Onassis Foundation's central selection was a building of high architectural value. For this reason, an international call for interest was held, bringing together a total of 66 nominations from around the world, including the proposal of the French architectural studio Architecture Studio. The façade reflects the philosophy of the basic architectural concept: a pale white, rectangular, bouncy shell through the finding of horizontal strips of marble discloses the main building blocks of the two rooms and other spaces. The special way of forming the facade acts as a backdrop that alternates, giving a sense of mystery to the building, and during the day the white horizontal "blinds" reflect the light causing bright attic away from the impression of a light wave, while at night -when marble strips are illuminated different; the picture is reversed, allowing to show the interior of the building and to expose the hot shell surrounding the halls of events.
